How much does a Wedding Photographer cost?

Hello there! If you’re in the middle of booking vendors for your wedding, you’ve probably asked yourself a few questions such as “How much does Edinburgh Wedding Photography cost?”. After looking into it, you might even be asking Google why Wedding Photography is so expensive?! Trust me, I’ve been in your shoes and I know that weddings aren’t cheap. So let me break it down for you!

When you receive a package guide or quote from a photographer, they probably thought long and hard about what to offer their clients and why. Here are some important things that go into a photographer’s pricing:

  1. Experience in the industry

Just like in any industry, people pay for experienced professionals! If somebody has been providing a service for a long time they’re probably efficient, helpful, and have a honed set of skills. This is definitely true for the photography industry. I know of photographers who have been operating a long time, and they have tweaked and perfected their workflow and editing style to provide an excellent service for their clients. This is something worth paying for. If the photographer you’re considering has reviews from past clients, this is always a great sign.

2. Security, Insurance and Gear

Ok, this point is super important. Another aspect of a photographer’s pricing is the security they bring to the day. And no, I don’t mean we bring buff bodyguards to your wedding day, don’t worry. I’m talking about bringing several camera bodies to the event in case of emergency; always shooting on two SD cards (per camera) at the same time in case one corrupts; having multiple hard drives or cloud based storage systems for your images. These are very expensive measures, but essential to keep the memories of your day secure!

Picture this: you book a photographer or even ask a family friend to take the photos of your big day. You get a GREAT deal, money-wise. They arrive and only have one camera body, or one SD card, and the camera plays up and stops working. All the images of your day, gone or non-existent. That’s the kind of thing that keeps me awake at night!! Scary stuff, right? Well, when you’re paying a professional they have systems in place to prevent that from ever happening.

Insurance is another big thing to consider - does your photographer have it? This is liability insurance, and is very important for every business. Some venues may even require insurance documents from all of your vendors, so it’s a good idea to check your photographer has insurance before booking.

3. Creativity and Ability

Looking for a super creative, modern photographer? Or maybe someone more traditional? If you’re interested in someone that has stunning imagery that might as well have been taken from a Hollywood produced film, you’re probably going to pay a premium! The skill that goes into crafting images of that calibre is impressive and takes time to hone. If you are interested in beautiful images, think of it like an investment! In theory, you’ll have these images for YEARS to come - your kids and grandkids will spend time looking through them. Plus, if you’re not going to get images like that on your wedding day - you probably never will.

To sum up, there is a photographer out there for everyone. My packages range from £950 to £1,600. I know photographers that charge £500 and others that charge £5,000 (yes, you heard me right). It all depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget looks like!
